The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Beijing Ditan Hospital, established in 2011, has now blossomed into a highly sophisticated and comprehensive medical unit, dedicated to excellence in respiratory care.

The department's forte lies in its profound expertise in treating a spectrum of critical respiratory diseases. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a global health concern, is managed with state-of-the-art approaches. The team is well-versed in the latest therapeutic modalities to alleviate symptoms, improve lung function, and enhance patients' quality of life. Asthma, another prevalent and potentially life-threatening condition, is treated with personalized treatment plans. These are tailored to each patient's unique triggers, severity levels, and lifestyle, ensuring optimal control and reducing the risk of exacerbations. In the realm of pulmonary infections, the department excels in accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment. Whether it's a common bacterial pneumonia or a more complex fungal or viral infection, the medical staff's in-depth knowledge and access to advanced diagnostic tools enable timely and effective interventions. Pulmonary thromboembolism, a condition that can be both acute and life - threatening, is managed with a multi-disciplinary approach. This includes rapid diagnosis through advanced imaging techniques and prompt initiation of appropriate anticoagulant or thrombolytic therapies. Cor pulmonale, often a complication of long-standing respiratory diseases, is also treated with a comprehensive strategy focusing on both the underlying respiratory condition and the associated heart problems. To better serve patients with these complex diseases, the department has established specialized units. A well-equipped bronchoscopy room and a pulmonary function laboratory play crucial roles in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. The department has made remarkable strides in bronchoscopy and respiratory intervention techniques. Having performed thousands of bronchoscopic procedures, the Department offers not only conventional operations like bronchoalveolar lavage, protective specimen brushing, and pathological tissue biopsy, but also advanced interventional techniques such as airway cryotherapy, argon plasma coagulation, balloon dilation, and airway stenting. Additionally, the Department has developed medical thoracoscopy techniques essential for closed thoracic drainage, pleural biopsy, bullae management under thoracoscopy, and empyema treatment, effectively solving the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of pleural diseases. The department has also introduced diagnostic and therapeutic services for sleep apnea syndrome using respiratory sleep monitoring technology. Specialized outpatient clinics have been set up for lung cancer, COPD, pulmonary embolism, asthma, and smoking cessation, providing focused and dedicated care.     

Furnished with cutting-edge medical devices, the department not only meets the highest clinical standards but also actively engages in scientific research. It has an impressive publication record, with over 20 papers in core journals, 16 of which are SCI-indexed articles. The department has also been actively involved in numerous research projects, including 1 national-level research project funded by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 3 specialized projects of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and 2 municipal medical administration center projects. It has further contributed to the academic community by participating in the compilation of 6 medical textbooks.
